What Is The Clothesline Project?

The Clothesline Project Chicagoland & Suburbs is a non-profit organization servicing the Chicagoland & Suburban areas. This stunning visual display travels to hospitals, theaters, universities, conferences, military bases, and corporations "breaking the silence" of violence against women. The project promotes healing for survivors of violence, educates viewers about violence against women, and promotes pro-active ways to prevent violence.

What Is The History Of The Clothesline Project?

The original project began began in Massachusetts with 10 shirts.

The Clothesline Project Chicagoland & Suburbs began in March of 1993 as an extension of Dr. Denise Fraser-Vaselakos' clinical practice with survivors of violence and now houses hundreds of shirts with new shirts arriving daily.

Today there are about 250 Clothesline Project lines across the United States with The Clothesline Project Chicagoland & Suburbs being one of the largest and most active in the country.

Who Can Send A Shirt?

Any woman survivor or any friend or family member of a woman victim of violence can make or send in a shirt.

Suggested color codes for the shirts are:

  • White Shirts - for women victims who have died because of violence.
  • Red/Pink Shirts - for women survivors of rape or sexual assault
  • Beige/Yellow Shirts - for women survivors of battery or abuse (verbal, physical, emotional, sexual, financial, harassment or psychological)
  • Green/Blue Shirts - for women survivors of childhood sexual assault or incest.
  • Lavender/Purple Shirts - for women abused because of their sexual orientation.

Who Displays The Shirts?

The Clothesline Project Chicagoland & Suburbs™ displays shirts all year long.

Shirt displays are:

  • held in conjunction with conferences on violence (i.e., Blue Cross Blue Shield, Provena Medical Center and Voices).
  • at the invitation of special interest groups (i.e., Alumni Association of the Family Institute, Soroptomist International, YWCA Take Back the Night Rally, Lucent Technology and Great Lakes Naval Training Center)
  • invited by universities, churches, libraries, theaters, colleges, rallies, hospitals, and other organizations (i.e., Northwestern University Medical School, Midwestern Osteopathic College, University of Chicago Medical School and Medical Center, Chicago State University, St. Mary of Nazareth, LULAC sponsored).
